Social Emotional Learning Tools

My Students

I love my fifth graders! Our Title I school in New York City is comprised of a diverse group of students, a large majority of whom receive free lunch.

Our students are very energetic and have very different learning styles, abilities, and needs.

Many of our students have learning disabilities and some of our students have fallen behind since the COVID-19 pandemic.

It is very important for us to encourage both group work, especially during these times, and independent work so our students can succeed academically and socially. In order to do this, we have to appeal to our students' interests by staying up-to-date with technology. Many of our students do not have computers, tablets, or internet at home. In order to succeed today, we want to expose them to this technology as much as possible in school!

My Project

Our students have been facing so many challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic. Their lives have been changed in many ways. I can't help but worry about their social emotional well being. In order to provide a safe and nurturing learning environment I want to be able to have the SEL tools readily available to help my students overcome the challenges they have been dealing with. Daily growth mindset/gratitude journals will help my students regulate their feelings during this difficult time. The journals in this project are designed to focus on being thankful for what we have, the big things in life, as well as the simple joys. Since I can't be with my students over the summer I want to help them start each day by writing down three things they are thankful for - so that they begin each day on the right note! I hope my students will be able to focus on all of the good things they have in their lives. The journals and fidget toys will help them to regulate their feelings while practicing having a positive mindset!
