Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Fifth grade is known to be a difficult transition year for students. Academically, they are being challenged more than ever before as they get ready to exit their elementary careers and embark on their secondary educational journey. Emotionally, they are going to critical changes that are effecting their actions and behaviors as they define a personality and sense of self. This is why teaching 5th grade has always been dear to my heart. Everyday I know that my students are undergoing several changes as they try to accomplish their goals.
My students are inquirers that strive to grow and expand their minds daily.
We are goal setters who constantly try to create the best version of ourselves. Even though many of my students face issues that are difficult for even some adults such as foster care, homelessness, low socioeconomic challenges, and unstable homes, they still bring their best attitudes, hopes, and dreams every day to embrace their future.
My Project
In an educational era that is full of school shootings, violence, and students who feel unwanted, unsafe, or unsupported, social-emotional learning has become extremely important. While many people choose to focus only on academics, I am aware that teaching the whole child and developing students that are well-functioning adults who are respectful, intelligent, and kind is more important for the future of our world.
By having a social-emotional curriculum that is used daily to teach students how to handle complex emotions, manage conflicts, and recognize their self-worth, they will be more prepared to handle all the other parts of growing up and going through adolescence and adulthood.
This project consists of many different social-emotional learning curriculum materials that will used to develop daily class meetings, home-school connection, and counseling with both different grade levels and split between gender groups to provide well-rounded social-emotional learning and coping techniques.
The items include resources that show the connection between emotions and brain activity, building character, becoming emotionally strong, and staying safe caring with others.
