Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My students are from the east side of Las Vegas. The majority of them are Latinx and identify with a variety of cultures and countries. We have many different communication blends with so many students possessing different sets of language skills, which makes our art classroom that much more important. In our class we really strive to give everyone the space to lift their visual voice in an expression of their own experiences and identity.
The goal I want to work towards with these materials is to give students the artistic strength to fully explore themselves without being held back by the quality of their materials.
We will be making zines about topics that are personally precious to them. Having a color printer and replacement ink in my room will give us access to printing materials directly.
The handheld sewing machines will make it easier to teach my students foundational life skills, like sewing, that will also open new realms of artistic expression.
Students and teachers should not be expected to fund their own learning. I believe that when students are asked to use art materials that are old or in disrepair, they feel like society also believes their personal worth and educational rights are also not valued.
My students will love using the paint markers and the drawing paper to express themselves through art projects.
Students have the right to good quality materials that will reflect the worth others can see in them and their education. This project is the first of many steps I plan to take in helping my students feel seen and valued.
