This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are honors level students in a low income area who are working hard, some very hard with jobs and more, to make better lives for themselves and get into a good college. They are hardworking, compassionate, and determined.

Many of my students come from a disadvantaged background, with a 65% economic disadvantage; there are students who will be the first in their family to go to college.

They know this and every day to them is a day to improve their lives and the lives of those they love.

My Project

Social emotional learning is a necessary part of all of our lives. It is how we learn to manage our emotions and become thriving adults. Many of my students this year have been struggling exponentially with dealing with the many different experiences that have had them feeling too much too fast. Usually we deal with only a little at a time, but this past year has been overwhelming for so many.

Students need a healthy way to express their emotions and to also calm them and get them out of their heads for a while.

As an avid knitter and crochet I am very aware of how wonderfully fulfilling and emotionally satisfying the art can be. Several of my students, and other students in the school, are struggling immensely and their well-being is of utmost concern.

I will be teaching this group of students, and any other groups how to knit and crochet and how to use this art form as an outlet for their fears, frustrations, and even to develop themselves by creating goals and aspirations. This will also allow students from all religious, cultural and political backgrounds to find a common area of interest and to build relationships that can last lifetimes.

These supplies are for my more low-income participants that cannot afford their own materials. They will get to keep their supplies.

They will each get knitting needles, a crochet hook, yarn, stitch markers and other essential tools. The knitting looms will be for some of my students unable to successfully use the needles or hook due to disabilities.

They will be taught the basics of crochet and knit, and by the end of the year have created their own knit and crochet hat.
