Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am attempting to get some STEM toys for my afternoon bus students to help them develop better social skills through cooperative play. Each day I supervise a group of students at the end of the day from several different classes for 20-30 minutes in the lobby of our school. They wait on a carpet while all the other students are dismissed after which we walk out to their bus. As you would expect this time can be very challenging for our young student.
By the end of the day students are either ready to run a mile or in desperate need of a nap.
They have worked hard all day in class sharing and learning but by the time they get to the carpet they seem to be all out of patience. We have been providing coloring pages to try and help them pass the time but we have noticed some social issues. Students who normally are easy going end up frustrated and in conflict with others because they have simply met their tolerance limit for the day. I am hoping that providing two sets of these Minecraft magnetic blocks will give students enough materials to play peacefully and develop cooperative social-emotional skills. The large coloring pages will also be a relaxing way for students to play together and work together toward a common goal. I hope you will consider donating to my students!
