I teach in a large school urban system that houses five different schools, including four PK-8 buildings and one high school. I teach in a fantastic PK-8 school filled with eager to learn students, innovative, hardworking staff members, and supportive administrative leaders. My school houses approximately 1,200 students that live in the Northeastern portion of the city. It is the largest of the four PK-8 buildings in the city. Our minority enrollment is around 42% of the student body. Our offerings and programs provide our students with a plethora of learning opportunities including a balanced literacy framework and a conceptually based math program.
Specifically, I teach technology and music to students from a variety of grade levels and it is important for me to always make sure they are provided with every opportunity and every resource they need to be able to learn, work, and grow as students.
I teach approximately students throughout each week and I encourage each and every one of them to always do their best and find their passions so that they can be the best student and future adult they can be!
My Project
Implementing social emotional learning is a district wide initiative that allows our students to be prepared for the future by learning a variety of soft skills that are integral to future success. These expectations are connected to our school's acronym, PBIS, and my project "Keys to Success." The students earn keys for exhibiting pro-social and pro-academic behaviors. For example, students can earn these keys by showing good work ethic by turning in their work on time or demonstrating perseverance. The program also helps students to learn how to deal with anger and to show kindness. Once they've earned a key, the students can then turn them in for rewards.
Students in the Kindergarten through second grade that I work with are motivated greatly by tangible rewards at this age.
The materials in this project include party favors such as toy assortments and carnival assortments, sticky hands and Mardi Gras beads. These are all of extreme high interest for kindergarten students. The light up glow in the dark supplies, mini animal plush toys, stress balls and squeeze toys, tongue flying emoji balls, soft stress and anxiety relief toys are geared toward the older 1st and 2nd grade students. It is my hope that these rewards will provide my students with the motivation to become active learners in our social emotional learning program.
