This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

The COVID pandemic had significant effects on the social emotional skills of our youth. As a School Counselor at Stead Elementary School, I witness and help support students with these challenges every day. One way we are working to address this is through increased classroom guidance to encourage greater school wide social emotional learning. As a second year Counselor, it is incredibly important that my students are engaged in my lessons. Materials like the large foam dice, social skills games, and the expandable ball will be used to make lessons, individual sessions, and groups experiential and interactive. I could also use all the curriculum I can get!

As a Title I school, our students and families often experience insecurity as well as trauma.

We see young humans experiencing big emotions in response to heavy life circumstances. For some students, school is their safe stable place. Our roles as trusted adults, support providers, and emotional regulation teachers are paramount. We cannot expect students to be academically and socially successful if they are unable to emotionally regulate. Sensory tools, squish items, and building bricks can be useful aids in teaching and reinforcing positive calming strategies for our students.

As a School Counselor, I advocate for all students. Some of our students with ADHD/ADD diagnoses struggle with executive function, emotional regulation, focus, attention, and work completion. Sometimes, these students are diagnosed with co-occurring disorders, such as Anxiety or Depression. Materials like workbooks, noise-cancelling headphones, chewelry, reading highlight strips, and sensory tools will serve as additional tools we can utilize to help these students be successful.
