Like many students around the nation, my middle school students have experienced severe trauma. However, they've proven to be such a resilient group of students. Middle school is the age range where students initially begin to formulate their individual identities, experience conflicts, and learn to navigate difficult situations.
As a part of our SEL program, we'd create an SEL room and use the bean bags, tea, fidget toys, snacks, and diffuser to provide our students with a safe space to promote peace, healing, and tranquility.
The goal of our SEL program is to equip students with the necessary tools needed to navigate the mental and emotional triggers they're exposed to. The room will also be a space to handle student conflicts in a non-confrontational manner. Student mentor training will also take place in the SEL room.
Ultimately, these materials will provide students and staff with an opportunity to integrate healing into the instructional environment.
