My classroom is always full of activity and learning that is student driven. The greatest need that I have seen in my classroom the past couple of years is the desire to connect with others outside our four walls and take ownership in themselves as learners and individuals.
My 4th graders are full of life and energy.
Many of my students are on free or reduced-price lunches, therefore they don't receive a lot of opportunities that many children get growing up. I have noticed that the majority of my students don't have background knowledge of our world outside of the city we live in. With the 21st century learning that is necessary for my students to be successful, it's critical that they are provided as many opportunities as possible to build knowledge on things that are not in their everyday life. My school has a great sense of community. We are always striving to better our students' lives through education.
My Project
Social-Emotional Learning is the process through which children and adults acquire and effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes, and skills. The selected materials can help strengthen social-emotional learning in my classroom by utilizing the peace corner, intentional lessons on social/emotional learning, and creating a calming atmosphere in the classroom.
A calming corner is a positive place that rewards students for noticing that they are feeling emotionally dis-regulated and using strategies to calm themselves so that learning can occur (The Watson Institute, 2017).
I would like to have a place in my classroom where the students can sit in a comfortable place, read a book, work with a fidget toy, use kinetic sand to push out emotions, or just rest for a minute to sort out their feelings.
