My students need resources to help them develop their ability to self-regulate and control their actions and words. While some situations in their lives are completely out of their control, others do not have to be.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I am the School Social Worker at a K-8, inner-city school. The students I serve live in vast poverty; school data shows that 99.7% of my students are economically disadvantaged.
My students have a multitude of obstacles in their lives; ones that we as adults cannot even begin to fathom, and yet they come to school.
Obstacles including but not limited to homelessness, lack of parental involvement, mental illness, etc. My students enter the school system having not learned emotional management. As they grow older this lack of skill becomes more evident as they are unable to control their behaviors and focus in the classroom.
My students want to be successful. They have dreams just like any other kid has, and yet their dreams are less likely to come true. So how can I better serve my students? I think the answer is by teaching them mindfulness, emotion identification and self-regulation so that they have a higher chance at making their dreams become reality.
The resources from this project will allow me to continue to serve these students to the level that they deserve.
My Project
In today's society, social-emotional learning (SEL) must be taught at school, too. While none of my students have easy lives, some are battling additional barriers. Homelessness is the reality for some of the families I serve. When there is instability in the home, it is even more vital to have these resources at hand. While some life situations are out of my students' control, how they respond does not have to be. These resources can help teach important life skills and promote SEL with my students.
I want to teach through games, rather than lectures!
The materials I selected are a range of books (EX: How to Take the Grrrr out of Anger & A Volcano in My Tummy), games (EX: Stop, Relax & Think, My Feelings Game, Totika Self-Esteem Game, & Mad Dragon) exercises and worksheets ( EX: CBT Toolbox for Children, Mindful Games Activity Cards, & What Would You Do? In a Jar) that will better help my students understand and control their emotions, help with learning how to express themselves confidently and in appropriate ways, as well as start the necessary conversations that will lead my students to self-discovery.
My goal is to help my students learn these life skills so that they can be successful in and outside the classroom. I hope to engage my students through these games and activities so that they can learn to self-regulate, be mindful, be confident and respect themselves as well as others.
