This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Social Emotional Learning is an important focus in kindergarten. Students are entering the classrooms with different strengths and needs. One area that all could use additional support is about sharing feelings and how to regulate them at school. We have morning meetings to check our feelings and we also have a calm area to help students reset when needed. This area is a safe place for students to take a break and practice some of the skills we have been learning during our morning meetings.

The timer will help students set a goal to finish a task or refocus when taking a break and the poster about feelings will support students in identifying their emotions with visuals and colors that will help them notice their own emotions and peers.

Stickers and punch cards will reinforce what students are learning and they can earn a punch in their card as part of our PBIS tier I support. Writing tools will motivate students in writing with different colors associated on how they are in feeling in their reflection paper. Other times, they can draw faces with the color they identify how they are feeling and how they would like to feel. For instance, blue is when they area feeling sad, and yellow is excited.

Students will learn how to express themselves with the help of the poster, different color pens, and stickers.

This project will help them feel successful at school, build connections with peers who maybe sharing similar feelings, and help us build a stronger community of caring kindergartners.
