Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our Student Support Team on campus has created social emotional learning and skill building support groups for both female and male students. In these weekly sessions, students will learn about mental health, goal setting, self empowerment, respect for self and others, and future career planning. Students will be provided the space to journal, collaborate with trusted teachers and sharpen their personal, social, emotional and academic skills.
My students deserve to have a space as they are aware enough to know they need one.
Many of them feel as if they do not have that space at school or at home. Furthermore, most of them state they do not have a trusted adult for support. Our goal is to equip them with the skills they need to reach their goals, recognize and regulate their emotions, and engage appropriately while in the learning environment.
What makes our students special is the fact they advocated for these social-emotional groups to happen. After running a successful girls and boys group this school year, we all saw a need to wash, rinse, and repeat for the upcoming school year. Being able to supply them with the basics like journals to write their thoughts in and materials to engage in hands-on activities is vital to the ability of the group to not only function but thrive! At the end of the day, our students are doing the best they can with what they've got.
