Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My class is composed of 55 fifth graders in a general education class, with students with IEP and ELL learners and special education students such as autism.

A typical day in my classroom looks active.

My students are engaged in learning activities that get them moving, talking to their peers, and asking great questions. You will not see a lot of worksheets in my classroom. My students are learning through hands-on experiences.

I teach in a Title I school.

My fifth-grade students come from very diverse families. I am excited to share that my school is a genuinely diverse community. Not only do students come from varying ethnic backgrounds and places, but the life experiences that they’ve had are incredibly unique. My scholars are creative, thoughtful, and full of excitement!

My students are 9 and 10-year children that love coming to school. When school was closed in the spring of 2020 due to the pandemic not only were the kids wanting to come back but we missed seeing their smiling faces every day.

My Project

What a better way to teach students about social-emotional learning, by collaborating with parents. This project will focus on Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning through building the home and school connection. Students will learn social-emotional learning through engaging ways to get parents involved. We will be hosting spirit Fridays to build school morale and to help students celebrate diversity. Teachers with other parents and school staff have organized programs and events to celebrate and honor the many cultures in your school community. Writing, painting, acting, and many more activities parents can do to support social and emotional learning at home. The activities can benefit both remote and in-person students. Our school's efforts to support social and emotional learning are through; character education, leadership, conflict resolution, or peer mediation. We can establish this and model this through the books I have added in my project which are great examples of how to model SEL. Every child has his or her own unique talents and abilities. With the celebrations, we can nurture every child's self-esteem. A child with a good sense of self is happier, more well-adjusted, and does better in school. Strategies for fostering self-esteem include giving your students responsibilities, allowing them to make age-appropriate choices, and showing appreciation for a job well done. We are trying to foster an inclusive community with different celebrations every week pretend play and dress up Brain Development, Cognitive Development, social-emotional learning. Students learn how to interact with others through play, and dramatic-play scenarios provide them with a way to practice how they should treat other people. Also painting decorations can help students express themselves. With your help, my students and parents will develop social-emotional. learning in a variety of ways. Especially during these troubling and stressful times.
