Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The almost 900 students at our school live in a low income neighborhood with limited access to basic school supplies. We are a Title I school with almost all of the students qualifying for free breakfast and free lunch each day. On average, 2-3 students in my classroom are considered homeless and struggle to find suitable housing. They qualify for assistance through The McKinney Vento Homeless Assistance Act.

Although my students have limited access to resources, they are enthusiastic to come to school each day, to learn many new standards.

I look forward to giving my students many of the much needed supplies this year by asking generous donors to provide these supplies.

My Project

This year, my students have been given the opportunity to experience the "Mindfulness Room" twice a month. The room consists of many different activities including breathing exercises, yoga lessons, meditation practice, as well as a gratitude list making activity station. Each of the stations we go to twice a month focuses on many of the social emotional learning standards we are learning in fifth grade.

The books I have selected for the classroom library all focus on themes such as empathy, kindness, and friendship.

It is important that my students are explicitly taught what empathy looks like and sounds like. Through many of these books for our classroom library, the students will be able to read during our silent reading time examples of those traits we talk about each week in the classroom and during our assigned Mindfulness Room time.

These books are meant to further enhance the students' knowledge of the various skills they are learning in class.
