This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I am requesting this grant to purchase SEL story books to aid in the learning of students who are sent to the ISS room at Alexander Elementary School. The purpose of this grant is to address the consistently underserved need of social emotional learning (SEL) in public education.
In the years following the nationwide shutdown of schools due to the Coronavirus, the need for SEL is more evident than ever.
Children are quicker to anger, and violence and mental illness is becoming an epidemic in our schools. Families have been deeply impacted by the mental, financial, and relational strains that Covid put on our communities, and we are now seeing the impacts that those strains are having on our children and schools. This is why it is so important that we take steps to help students gain the skills and knowledge needed to manage these deficits.
SEL stories can be used to reverse this problem. Using SEL books allows children to engage in solution-oriented discussion about topics like managing ADHD in the classroom or learning empathy for classmates-- or for bigger conversations like living in a single parent household, dealing with the aftermath of a traumatic event, or living with a parent struggling with active mental illness or addiction. Many of these subjects are touchy and tricky to talk about, and parents and educators often feel ill-equipped to discuss them. When children are not given the tools to manage these life events, it is common to see increases in undesired behaviors and decreases in academic progress- it is imperative that we as educators work to fill that gap. parent struggling with mental illness or addiction.
I hope that you will consider donating to this grant and helping to create happier, healthier, better equipped students at Alexander Elementary School.
