Over the past 6 years, I have gained such a great opportunity, compassion, and love for the students at my school. We are a low-income, charter school located in the heart of our city. As a 3rd grade teacher, I am working on providing myself as a useful resource to help reach all of my families and students in my classroom. My students are so important to me because we build a natural community not only just in each of our classrooms, but we build community and support with our families, staff, and school community. We take pride in our strong culture of diversity and inclusion. While we have many low-income families, we want to provide enough resources for everyone. We utilize individual learning plans to focus on the student as a whole. We want to focus on strengths and building support. I want to provide tools my students will need to create and teach a potential of various learning aspects in each center of the classroom including literacy activities, math, reading, writing, art, and using their creative open-mindedness throughout the school day.
As we will be able to utilize these games during indoor recess, when we earn classroom prizes as a whole class, and/or Fun Fridays, we will support my students' learning by gaining those social-emotional skills that they didn't get to experience during distance learning due to COVID-19. Each day we have a classroom jar that students are given the opportunity to fill and once it is filled we pick as a class special days that we can celebrate and earn together. During indoor recess, we don't have all of the necessary or extracurricular activities for students to utilize during that time either! Providing these games as opportunities for them in the classroom are giving them and helping them grow in their social emotional skills, working in partners or small groups in general. It is important for my students to gain these abilities to create community in the classroom as well!
