Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach 26 wonderful, tiny humans who are experiencing school for their very first time! Over 75% of my students receive free or reduced-price lunch and are part of families that are considered low SES. My goal is to provide my students with the most enriching environment possible so they are set up to not just succeed, but thrive in life! When the classroom environment is comfortable and enriching, students are able to worry less about their surroundings and focus more on the content! It also is critical to me to provide my students opportunities at school that they might not have elsewhere. I hope that by setting a wonderful tone in kinder these students will continue to grow throughout the rest of their educational careers.
My Project
Kindergarten is a critical time for students to develop social-emotional skills and literature is a wonderful tool to help them learn these skills! For most students, kindergarten is their first time away from home and first time in a large group setting. By having literature that identifies emotions and demonstrates positive emotional regulation students can better reflect on their own experiences.
This school year my school adopted a new curriculum that supports emotional regulation and I immediately saw the benefit it had on my students.
Not only have students’ peer relations improved but their academics have as well since they are spending less time in conflict with themselves and others. I am hoping that adding more resources around this topic will allow me to continue to support students social-emotional well being.
