Social Emotional Books to Help Us Feel Good!

Help me give my students books that make students feel good! Books like Ghost, Freak the Mighty, and Holes help students learn about their feelings and how to navigate social situations.

My Students

This project is for my amazing 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders! I work with a small group of gifted students who are gifted in reading and achieving above level. The problem is that my students often don't have books that challenge their reading and thinking. Our school is in a high poverty zone with students coming from low social economic status homes. Often students lack access to quality reading materials. But, they love to read, and crave meaningful experiences with books!

These books were chosen with student's hearts in mind - students will learn to maintain healthy friendships, control their emotions, and make responsible decisions from the characters and stories in these books.

I want to help students empathize and learn important social skills. In these books students will learn through characters that face family hardships, friendship failures, and tough decisions. In our classroom students will learn to feel comfortable with their own social relationships and emotions. Help me inspire these students with new reading materials!

My Project

In the classroom, we will read books like My Name is Maria Isabel, Freak the Mighty, and Ghost. The students will discuss how the characters deal with social and emotional situations. We will learn how to empathize and use the lessons we learn both in and out of the classroom.

This project will put amazing books featuring social emotions learning lessons into the hands of students who love to read.

As a class, students will use these books to engage as a community of readers. These books will then become part of our classroom library and then passed on to next year's class and beyond.
