Social Emotional 4th Graders

Help me give my students tools for learning social emotional skills to help them better understand their peers and people around them!

My Project

My students are amazingly smart and talented children who are growing up in some tough situations. My students are residents of the Strawberry Mansion neighborhood of North Philadelphia, which is one of the most historically violent neighborhoods in Philadelphia. Unfortunately, my students have been exposed to trauma and experiences that no child should ever have to be exposed to.

Something that cannot be ignored in my classroom is the need for direct social emotional instruction.

Students cannot learn reading and math if they are too stressed or worried or scared or angry. Students must be taught how to handle big emotions safely, best interact with peers, understand other's perspectives, and recover from emotional distress. Social emotional instruction is our best chance to help students break the cycles of the neighborhood.

The tools purchased through your generous donation will help social emotional learning take place in the 4th grade classroom. Students will use journals to record their emotions and perspectives. Stickers and rewards will be tangible rewards for students who engage in kindness and compassion with peers because something we need to earn something to remind us that what we did was great! Calming classroom decor, the large white board, and basic supplies such as pencils and dry erase markers will help set a tone of the classroom that is less chaotic and a safe place for us to grow and learn. Teachers Pay Teachers resources and books on literacy, spelling, language arts, social studies, and writing will help us develop skills necessary for us to write as an outlet for our emotions, while learning vital academic content.
