Help me give my students mats to sit on in the grass, clipboards to hold on to their stuff, chalk to write on the sidewalks, and a speaker with microphone so they can still all hear me outside.
The students at my school are tomorrow's engineers! Our school is focused on the STEM Model and students experience an integrated STEM-based approach to learning in all subjects each quarter. Our students know that they are preparing for futuristic skills in jobs that do not even exist yet. In 4th-grade students switch classes for ELA, Math, and Science/SS. They also have an RTI elective period where they get to choose a topic of interest while students receive individualized intervention as needed.
The students who come to my class begin the year thinking they are just fulfilling their math needs for the 4th grade but in reality they are learning to problem solve, engineer, create, explore, and justify their thinking.
My students walk out excited and confident with their ability to attack any problem!
My Project
As we plan our return to learning systems and procedures, I have thought a lot about how I can give the students as much space as possible in an engaging way. I have thought about the struggle to make math fun and engaging while still keep students spread out. Learning outside is always fun in school. We are lucky enough to live in a state that is pretty beautiful most of the year. I think working outside will be an amazing resource for my 4th graders this year!
When we go outside we can spread out, take off our masks, enjoy some sunshine, and still learn!
I would like my students to have a space to sit that is not itchy but easily sanitized and put aside when not in use. I also need something so I can be heard by all of the students and play our awesome math songs so we can move and dance like we would in class.
The mats allow each student their own space on the grass that is easily sanitized and set aside when not in use. The clipboards help keep students items from flying away and also gives them a hard surface to write on. The chalk gives us a second material to write with utilizing the sidewalk. The speaker and microphone allow us to sing songs and also hear all of the directions while we work outside. Together these materials will help to learn in the time of Covid19 to be a little less scary and a lot more fun. These items allow me and my students more flexibility and engagement in our learning environment.
