Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

In my small groups and individual sessions, students have the opportunity to learn and practice skills that they will always be able to use. Through hands-on activities, students learn how to be good friends to one another and how to be good students and citizens.

As a school social worker, I work with students of all ages in an urban, low-income school district; our students and staff members work hard to ensure that lots of learning is happening in our buildings.

I am so fortunate to have the opportunity to teach students the skills they will need to know in order to become successful adults one day. I love how hard my students work to improve themselves and learn appropriate coping and social skills. We always have fun and learn so much. Students with better social-emotional skills perform better academically.

My Project

My students will use all of the resources in small groups with their peers and in individual sessions with me. These resources like "Feelings Playing Cards" and "Temper Tamers In a Jar: Helping Kids Cool Off and Manage Anger" will ensure that the students are able to learn the critical social and emotional skills in a hands-on and fun way. Every resource covers multiple skills that we work on in our sessions, such as cooperation, anger management, being a friend, and expressing our feelings.

Sometimes we work so hard on academics, we forget that children need support in learning how to be respectful, kind, and cooperative.

Unfortunately, the materials for developing these soft skills aren't always in the budget. Your donation will help our students have access to resources that they would not have had otherwise. These toys and games will help develop our hard-working students into well-rounded, successful, and productive citizens.
