Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Second grade is such a fun year! Seven-year-old children eager to learn and excited to be back in the classroom with friends and teachers who want to see them succeed.

My students come from a variety of cultural, social, and economic backgrounds.

Regardless of what background my students come with, they all have one thing in common, they are all living through a pandemic. A pandemic that has affected each and every one of them in different ways.

My Project

The children in my classroom are eager to be back to in person learning full time after a year and a half of learning being interrupted due to the pandemic. Children are coming back into the classroom having experienced trauma after being exposed to many unfortunate situations such as distance learning, isolation, missing out on family and friends, and sadly losing loved ones.

My project Social-Emotional Learning would provide me with several books including the series A Little SPOT by Diane Alber that promote meaningful discussions about feelings, emotions and life skills that are becoming much more necessary to teach in the classroom than ever before.

The project also includes emotion plush toys and educator guides with lesson plans that include hands on activities, discussion and writing prompts to enhance each read aloud. Books such as The Magical Yet and After the Fall promote a growth mindset and My Magical Breath teaches breathing techniques. All three of these books are also in my

project and all important aspect of social and emotional learning.

The books and other materials will provide students with a safe place to express themselves, become aware of feelings and emotions as well as learn life skills that will ultimately lead to a much more focused and successful day of learning. Some of the standards that would be met through the reading, writing and discussions include ELA.RL.2.7, ELS.SL.2.1.A, ELA.SL.2.3, ELA.SL.2.4, ELA.W.2.8.

The last two items requested in my project the carpet and stadium seats do not match directly to a standard but do give my students a comfortable meeting space to enjoy being read to and have meaningful discussions.
