This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our students and their families are really special. We have a large school, with an ethnically and socioeconomically diverse population, and we work hard to create opportunities for our community to get together to share their unique experiences and engage in and celebrate learning.

With a majority of the families in our school living in poverty, we try to create innovative learning experiences that build our students' repertoire.

We want to offer students at our Title I public school the same sorts of experience that students in rich public schools receive. We are focused on social justice and educational equity.

My Project

In our school, we focus on teaching to the whole child. We focus on teaching behavioral, academic, and social and emotional competencies. We know that these competencies are all intertwined and that learning is more than just developing sets of skills...it is also about self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationships, and decision making.

This project is focused on helping middle school students become aware of their feelings and the needs that are behind those feelings.

Once they can identify their feelings and needs, then they can brainstorm possible strategies to meet their needs.

In this project, students will read the novel TOUCHING SPIRIT BEAR in which the main character has to learn to identify his feelings, take responsibility for his actions, and make things right. While reading this book, we will engage in identifying feelings and needs, building relationships, and exploring the decision making process. This project offers many opportunities for students to grow socially and emotionally and for educators to teach to the whole child.
