Social and Emotional Learning for Middle School Students

Help me give my students some active movement in their day with games such as large Connect Four.

My Project

Playing these games not only helps the students burn off some energy, but it allows them to socialize in ways that are not as common as they once were. As ice breakers to start class, students can play ring toss game or giant checkers to get settled in for the period. At the end of class it provides motivation to get the assignments completed and to work hard to earn the ability to play games. Giant connect four and Giant Jenga is always a fun way to get students involved and working together to create relationships and classroom community.

Students will get the time to interact with each other face to face.

This is something that does not happen very often these days. Proper social interactions are so important for students in middle school. This is an age where talking to each other in small communities such as a learning support classroom are so important.

I want to create a safe space for my students to make mistakes and have fun all while learning important life skills along the way. I am hopeful that they will not only have fun while playing, but will learn appropriate social skills while enjoying the beginning or end of class.

In the games like ladder toss, tic-tac-toe and yard dice, my middle school students will be able to team up to create strategies with others to win the game. Small items like jolly ranchers are also motivators for the students to “win”. It is also important for students at the age of 12-14 to learn how to lose. Being a good sport and having sportsmanship is a very important life skill. Again, having fun and being confident and comfortable in my classroom is my goal for these items on my list.
