My students need 6 pop up soccer goal sets, 3 sets of training cones and 8 books about kids and their adventures in order to promote healthy and active lifestyles.
I teach a wonderful group of second grade students. They are excited to come to school each day and to learn from one another. They have positive attitudes and are always up for a challenge. My students enjoy using their critical thinking skills to evaluate new information and working in collaborative groups to solve problems.
This year our grade level goal is to get our students moving!
We want our students to learn healthy habits now by teaching them games and activities that they can play for a lifetime.
My Project
When it is time to go out to recess, my students want to play soccer. This project is kid-inspired because soccer is a game they love and this project provides everyone with a chance to improve their game.
This project provides a soccer field for all skill levels!
I’m requesting 6 pop up soccer goal sets with 3 sets of cones that can be used to set up a playing field. By having 6 different fields during our PE time, we can divide the kids by skill level and focus the level of play for each group. We’ll be able to have “new to soccer” drills/games that concentrate on the rules as well as an “advanced player” drills/games.
I'm also requesting 8 books by Lauren Castillo. In these books, kids have varying levels of physical activity. We’ll read these books and then talk about the choices of the characters. I think their favorite will be “Happy Like Soccer”, and it ties in perfectly with our activity stations. We will then compare it to “Twenty Yawns” & discuss the importance of being active 60 minutes a day.
This project increases peer-to-peer interactions in many ways. One way is that it gets kids talking about how the characters in the stories are active and comparing it to themselves. This brings a new awareness to healthy lifestyle choices and the importance of being active each and every day. This project allows kids a structured environment to coach each other on the rules of soccer and a place to play against classmates at the same level. By having a field for everyone, the game will be more fun for all.
