Within the next 20 years, one of our students will be the one to walk on Mars or go back to the Moon. It is important to plant the seed of science and math in our students. Being able to give my students the opportunity to build and launch a rocket would give them a hands on experience of rocketry
My students here in Alabama come from diverse backgrounds.
Each class is culturally mixed, which gives each child a well rounded education. My students absolutely love science and math. However, most of them have not had an experience in the classroom of "doing" science. During our space unit, they are very interested and curious about the world, universe, and galaxy. Since our school is a Title 1 school, most students need some sort of intervention. being able to give my students the best education is so important because school may be the only place they get to experience activities their culture may not allow them to do.
My Project
In fifth grade, students must learn what space travel is and how technology is used in space. One aspect of space travel is rocketry. I plan to allow my students to build their own rocket out of a 2-liter plastic bottle, cardboard, construction paper, and tape. After the students have built their rocket as a team, they will fill up their rocket with water and then launch them using the air pump and rocket launcher. Building rockets is a great hands on experience that would allow the students to collaborate, design, and actually test their rocket.
Being able to give these students the opportunity to actually launch their rocket would allow the students to fully understand the concept of rocketry and find out other ways to improve their rocket in order to fly higher.
They will understand how important space travel is and how the launch pad works.
