This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I am a Special Education teacher in a low-income, high poverty area in Homestead, Florida. I teach students with Emotional Behavior Disorders and Learning Disabilites. It is a Title I school which means that almost all of the students in the school receive free or reduced price lunch. I am currently teaching math, science, language arts, reading, social studies, and social/emotional skills to a wonderful group of six and seven year olds. Most of these children come from difficult home environments and lack exposure to things that we can sometimes take for granted. My students are hard working and eager to learn. They are also so grateful for new opportunities and excited for fun learning experiences. My special needs students are in great need of four mini laptop computers to work on a district mandated computer program to improve their reading and math skills. Most of my students do not have access to technology outside of the classroom setting. I currently have zero working computers in my classroom. The technology resources I am requesting will help provide my special needs students with more access to reading and math resources, that they so desperately need.
My Project
By providing the technological resources to my special needs students, they will be able to have more access to the fabulous literacy and math program our school district offers that we are limited to, due to the lack of equipment in our classroom.
With the addition of the four laptops I am requesting, I will be able to set up a computer center to help my special needs students to access a district mandated program to help with reading, comprehension and math.
My students are working below grade level and having this resource would be so beneficial. While I am working with small group instruction, other students can go to the computer center to sharpen their reading and comprehension skills. They will also be able to sharpen their math facts in both addition and subtraction which is an important life skill.
