This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

At our Title I school in East San Jose, the Multimedia Club is made up of young creators who come from historically marginalized communities. They use media to explore and expose what is happening around them, from environmental issues to stories of culture, struggle, and hope.

Last week at a community parade, a student turned to me and said, “Stephens, we should make documentaries about what we see in the East Side,” and in that moment I felt it—the urgency, the pride, and the power of youth ready to tell the truth about their home, from dry creek beds and illegal dumping to the way our neighborhoods heat up faster and are shaded less than others.

We are requesting the DJI Mavic 3 Pro Fly More Combo with DJI RC Pro, a professional drone that will allow our students to safely film aerial footage and return to a level of storytelling we lost when our previous drone was damaged beyond repair. This new drone will bring their ideas to life and give them the perspective they need to capture the full scope of what is happening to our environment.

Students will document the impacts of climate change in East San Jose while learning professional filmmaking, editing, and research skills. Their work will live on through digital campaigns, visual essays, and school-wide exhibitions. This project builds student voice, environmental literacy, and creative confidence that reaches far beyond the classroom.
