S.O.A.R. - Students Obtain Air Radiantly!

My Students

I run the music and drama therapy program at my school which is a center for individuals with profound special needs. They come from all types of ethnic backgrounds, but most are from economically depressed areas. Their needs are affected by profound autism, Down syndrome, and multiple disabilities, both physical and cognitive. Some are even medically fragile. Most of my students are non-verbal, and many require wheelchairs for mobility.

Engaging with hands-on, direct musical experiences with other expressive arts, such as drama, movement, dance, and the visual arts, works magic for individuals with profound special needs.

My Project

My students experience profound challenges such as autism, Down Syndrome, and medically fragile conditions on a 24/7 basis. Many are confined to wheelchairs and most are non-verbal.

This project will enable my students to experience the joy and thrill of a typical ropes course where participants actually become safely air-borne.

Participants in S.O.A.R. will be safely harnessed and actually lifted off the floor of the stage with professional climbing rope, climbing pulleys, carabiners, and helmets.

While being four to six feet in the air wearing various bird costumes, they will become actors and actresses in our major school musical production. This unique black light theater production will be performed for our school and the community at large. This show will feature birds and animals from the south Florida ecosystem. Due to its highly motivational format, the show is geared towards helping my students become more active participants. In addition, it will hopefully increase their self-esteem as they move from their usual roles of being passive observers to becoming actors, actresses, dancers, and singers in the school production.
