My Students
Remember how good it feels to be part of a team, to know that you can do the same things your friends can do, and that you can compete with others and strive to win? Imagine having those same feelings and being visually impaired.
The students at my school have the opportunity to go out for three team sports: track, goal ball, and wresting.
All of the students are visually impaired and they compete in these sports with other State Schools for the Blind in their conference. As they experience competition they learn about sportsmanship and how to be gracious winners as well as gracious losers. They also get to experience travel to other states as they attend the conference meets. Socializing with other teenagers that have similar visual impairments is an added benefit to the conference trips.
My Project
During track season the athletes practice the shot put, running (distances from 60 meters all the way up to a mile), and several jumps - the standing long jump, running long jump, the 3 consecutive jumps, and the triple jump. The athletes that are totally blind or whose vision impairment makes it difficult to see the lines on the track are allowed to hold onto a 60 meter long wire as they run.
The track uniforms these athletes currently wear are over twenty years old.
The elastic waistbands have no stretch left in them. The zippers on the warm up jackets are broken and the lining is torn. Our athletes need new track uniforms. Our mascot is the eagle. New uniforms will give our track team new confidence and make them feel strong and able to soar like an eagle.
