My students are all blind or visually impaired. This makes it difficult, even scary sometimes, to move around and be active. It's easier for them to be sedentary and not have to worry about running into things and getting hurt. Walking is a safe physical activity they can do. They can walk by themselves by using a white mobility cane or they can walk with a friend by using a sighted guide technique. In a familiar and open environment, such as their school gym, they can walk completely unassisted. A sense of distance is difficult for many of them to understand and so to many of them, when they are told they've walked a mile, think it's an extraordinarily great distance.
