This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I currently provide speech and language services for students in kindergarten through fifth grade. I also support the pre-kindergarten program for three and four-year-olds in my school. The items that I am requesting is to support my students with Autism Spectrum Disorder(ASD); many of whom are in the younger grades. My students need materials so that I can create individualized treatment plans to support their unique needs.
Many of my students with ASD have sensitive sensory systems and need specific accommodations to help them attend to and complete therapy tasks.
Fidget toys will allow them to remain focused and clam while they are working on their goals in therapy. When my students get overwhelmed they often have outbursts and need support to help them calm down. The book that I am requesting will provide strategies to not only support my students during these challenging times, but will also provide strategies to prevent outbursts.
My students with ASD also have deficits in social communication skills. Hence, therapy sessions have to include activities that directly address speech and language goals while simultaneously creating a calm, supportive and socially enriched environment. I will use the rug, toys and story books to plan floor-time sessions for my students. Many of my younger students need to learn through play, reading and hands on activities. The activities on the rug would help improve joint attention skills. It will help facilitate social communication skills (turn-taking, identifying emotions, turn-taking, eye contact), create language learning opportunities to improve receptive and expressive language skills and help students build rapport with their peers. The toys and story books that I chose would support this goal in a fun engaging way so that students look forward to attending therapy.
