S.O.A.R. Garden - Seeds Of A Revolution

My students need supplies to implement our school garden. Garden tools allow our students to work the land/soil and the greenhouse with the liquid soil plant polymer begins the planting process.

FULLY FUNDED! Ms. D.'s classroom raised $457

My Students

S.O.A.R.: Seeds of a revolution is the revolution to bring awareness of healthy nutrition into our school. Many of our students do not have the simple pleasures of growing, harvesting, and then eating crops they grow. As we nurture the land and our students a connection happens.

We are a Title I public school, with many of our students on free and reduced lunch, located in Southeast Georgia. Our student population is from Pre-K to 5th grade.

Presently, I teach 2nd, 4th, and 5th grade gifted students. However,I visit all grade levels with green activities. These activities can range from seed planting, water conservation,to the importance of organic farming. All of our students look forward to "garden day", when they can go outside and plant in the dirt. The laughter and dirty hands and faces coming from the garden is nature's music.

My Project

Many of our students live in a concrete jungle and do not have the resources available to enjoy eating foods they have grown. I have gained 2 plots of land outside of the school walls, approximately 2900 sq. ft. to begin an organic garden. Crops grown and harvested will be incorporated into our school cafeteria. Our children will experience first hand from farm to table. We need tools to work these plots of land and materials to grow seeds to plant outside in tilled soil. Students also learn the value of cooperation and patience.Students work in teams to complete different projects throughout the gardens.Patience begins with the planting of the first seed and the anticipation of the first sprout,on through the growing phase and finally the harvest. In an immediate gratification society, patience is not always practiced. Hopefully, some of our students will bring some planting knowledge home. Working hand in hand with nature allows children and adults to appreciate the bounty of the earth

Childhood obesity is rising at an alarming rate in this country.

Childhood type 2 diabetes is at an all time high with numbers increasing. Many children have a diet that mainly consists of fast food and many do not eat fresh fruits or vegetables. Healthy bodies lead to healthy minds. If our children/students can take the knowledge they learn from our S.O.A.R. gardens and bring that home, and perhaps plant a garden at home that will help nourish their families, the possibilities are endless.
