My Students
Our students come from a low to medium income area, with more than a third receiving free school lunch. We have a good number of refugees and migrants, and it is becoming more diverse every year. We also house a magnet program for gifted/talented. One of the three sixth grade classes are students from around the district who tested into the program.
With this wide range of levels, we work as a sixth grade team to implement exciting extensions and activities that promote engagement and integration.
Last year, we got a video camera, which we only got to use once because of Covid-19. This year, we hope to add to our technology and supplies, so we can be prepared to go great things once we settle into the new normal.
My Project
It is becoming rather obvious that we need to dismiss the use of fossil fuels and turn to renewable sources of energy. This project gives students a chance to see how the sun generates energy that can be converted to kinetic energy by use of a simple solar panel. With these panels, students will build a small car using recycled materials, and will use the panel to power the motor.
Positive experiences using solar energy will help students see the possibilities.
It is the kind of experience that can encourage them to make changes in their future energy needs, and can help them become an advocate for green technology.
More than a third of students from low‑income households
