My Project
Many of my fabulous students want to be in the healthcare field. Most are on a pathway designed to prepare them for a career in medicine, nursing, health assisting, or research. In our classroom, we are laying the foundation skills that will prepare them for their post-secondary education, whether it be college, nursing school, or technical training.
The best way to learn how to be in healthcare is to role-play being in healthcare!
Each of our physiology units is designed around project-based learning in which students apply what they learn about normal physiology to help create a care plan for a simulated patient. In this way, they take what they know about normal body function, research the abnormal function, and apply it to the real-world problem of patient care.
What our classroom needs is deeper experiential learning opportunities. Students studying kidney function should know how to do a urinalysis and what that can tell us about disease. They should be able to put their hands on a heart so that they can envision what is happening when they take blood pressure or use a stethoscope to listen to a beating heart. The should understand how each organ in the digestive system works so they can understand what underlies digestive disorder. Adding these experiences to our classroom will deepen my students' understanding and, hopefully, the spark that drives their pursuit of a career in healthcare!
