Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I serve Gifted and Talented students in a highly diverse, low-income district. The students come from many different backgrounds and a majority of our students speak a second language. Our students come from supportive families who want the best for their kids but often do not have the resources they need to assist them. These students are focused and excited to learn.
Gifted students are tomorrow's leaders, inventors, problem-solvers, and creators!
Providing them with opportunities to think critically and collaborate is essential for their success while providing them more opportunities to be more college and career ready!
My Project
Students will be engaged in a photography curriculum that is infused with art and economics. Students will explore the cameras in the auto setting and work together to collect a variety of photographs for their portfolio of work/ pre-test.
After establishing their starting point and adding photos to their individual portfolios, students will begin to talk about the nature of photography, the benefits and services it provides to society, and why they think they might want to be a photographer.
Students will reflect on pre-test prompts which will ask questions such as "What do photographers need to know?" and "What is the most difficult aspect of being a photographer?" These questions will lay the groundwork for what students know as they dive into the professional business of photography.
From this point forward, students will analyze the profession of photography and how it has changed over time. They will explore how DSLR digital cameras have created more competition in various markets and how this evolution has affected pricing, quantity, and the variety of photographers. Photography students will analyze the expenses involved in a photography business based on their preferred and predicted standard of living. This business plan will focus on paying off the debt of equipment, create a buffer for living expenses, and project a budget for insurance, upgrades, traveling, and equipment failure.
Students will learn about different photography markets and add a chosen field to their business plan such as fashion, commercial, sports, wedding, nature, and portrait photography as they develop composition skills of shooting in Manual mode. As students learn about the relationship between composition, aperture, ISO, shutter speed, and editing they will be given mini-projects based on their business plan market. This course can be provided every year to new student groups.
