My Students

We are a small rural school near a larger community. We have had a high school here for a little over ten years now. Approximately 60% of our population is of Native American descent with many different tribes reflected. Cultural values and honoring our past is very important to Indigenous culture and most of my families. My students need to find commonality and build each other up. In order to do so, they must understand one another. As a part of this effort, we write about our lives, our individual heritage, and our dreams. We plan, write, and share our memoirs with each other and the world.

Most of my students are of many cultures, and do not know much about each other's lives; it is a time to learn more about each other's world.

Even though they have attended school together for twelve years, the students learn much about each other through this project. Most of my students are Indigenous American and receive free or reduced-price lunch which exhibits the socio-economic status of many students that enter my room. With this lack of money, many of my students cannot supply the basic supplies for education and project supplies are impossible.

My Project

Indigenous students often feel they have nothing to say. With most of my students coming from economically depressed, indigenous families, they often feel their voices are not heard or worth hearing. With the writing project of "So, What's Your Story?" each student writes a memoir to share his/her life experiences with classmates and others. Approximately 75% of our students receive free or reduced-price lunches and their families cannot afford the materials for the classroom projects that go beyond the textbook.

The scrapbooking materials allow students to create a memoir (scrapbook style) that allows their stories to be told in a creative and individual way.

The first and foremost purpose of these materials is to create equality in the project so that each student, regardless of economics, will have access to the creative process. As students first write, then embellish their projects, this campaign allows them to choose the background paper, the embellishments and materials that fit their personalities. Expression, especially creative expression, is valued in the Indigenous (Native American) household often above education. Balancing the two into the project gives students a way to value the writing process.

With such a small space in my classroom, the storage for materials is at an optimum must to keep materials from being lost, damaged, or mixed up with other projects. The storage will allow students to sort and keep materials organized for the projects and help them at the same time, organize their own process in the project. Students will sort the materials and pack away after use which aids them in learning to plan ahead and organize other aspects of their lives.
