Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a science teacher in a diverse multicultural urban setting who has been given two classes of visually impaired students who deserve materials that will help them understand the world around them.

My visually impaired students are in grades three through five and are coming to a science class for the first time. They have been very excited about our community garden and I want to help the students create it. We have torn up the front lawn of our school to make a Peace Garden. I would like these students to be a part of it. They want to create a border around one of the big trees which we have made a flower bed around. I want to help them make stepping stones to border this bed, making that their special project. Later in the year they will be exposed to animals and body coverings. I want them to feel what a turtle is like, feel feathers that make up a birds covering and create furry critters of their own as a reminder of what mammals are like. I have no supplies that can help these students. My basic textbooks are of no use to children who cannot see the words therein. Having hands on materials will be such a tremendous help to give them an idea of what animals are like. Being a part of the community project will give them ownership and a sense of value.

I need a variety of resources for these students. I would like feathers that can be used for descriptive and for creative purposes. They can make models of their own and also feel each individual feather composition. The stepping stones kits contain many things necessary for making a stepping stone border around the big tree flowerbed in the Peace Garden. Making them from start to finish will give them ownership of the project and a sense of pride. The kits are reusable and can be utilized for future students. I also want clay to make landform models, animal models and celestial body models. Rubber and plastic counters are designed to be exact replicas of fish and reptiles which will help students to feel what they are like. Too many times these students are left out of things because they cannot see. I want them to have a chance to experience the world as much as possible. Just because they are blind does not mean they are incapable of learning, only that they need a different method. I want to give them that method.

You can help these worthy students to achieve that goal of encountering their world by helping me with acquisition of these few supplies. I can make these things go a long way toward assisting these children and the joy they (and you) will receive cannot be counted in monetary value.
