So Many Books, So Little Time...

My Students

In today's world of iPhones, Playstations, Xboxes and readily available entertainment, many kids no longer know the reward of simply reading a book. More and more, I hear students say, "I hate reading." How far have we fallen when children declare their hatred of the written word?

Looking at my classes, I see a room filled with typical 11-12-year-olds.

They love sports, their friends, TV, hunting, and fishing. They are attached to their phones, iPods and tablets. Hallway conversations reveal fights with friends, dramatic breakups, who said what to whom, and weekend plans. They love to dance and listen to music. Their day is made when I utter the words, "You may listen to your music while you work." In many ways, they remind me of myself at that age. But the challenges they face in today's world are much greater.

My Project

Maya Angelou once said, "Any book that helps a child to form a habit of reading, to make reading one of his deep and continuing needs, is good for him." With the development of instant gratification games at your fingertips, children have lost interest in anything that requires persistence and stamina. The result is a loss of interest in reading. As a Reading teacher, my focus has had to shift as well. Instead of assuming that students are reading at home, I am focusing on renewing their interest in reading and having them read during the school day. In order for this to happen, we need books! Lots and lots of books! Books purchased through this project will be inventoried and added to my classroom library. They will become a part of our daily book talks, which, throughout the course of a school year, will potentially introduce students to 180 different books that they may not have even known existed! Imagine the impact of 180 book talks every year!

Since beginning the daily book talks, students have shown a renewed interest in reading.

The books that have been a part of my book talks are being read and have a waiting list in both my classroom library and the school library. But without your help, my classroom library will run out of new titles for our book talks.
