Mrs. Nunn from Chicago IL is requesting supplies through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need 5 sets of book bins to contain and display the numerous titles in our classroom library.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
From fairy-tales to historical non fiction, our classroom library has over 300 books from a variety of genres. Without sufficient storage, it is impossible to make the entire classroom library available for students to independently choose books that match their interest and reading level.
My second grade students attend a neighborhood elementary school located in an urban, high needs community.
Although my students have acquired a love of reading, many of them are unable to regularly visit the local public library. Each day at school is the one opportunity they have to independently choose and read a variety of books that match their interest.
Currently I can only display half of the available titles in the few bins I have personally purchased. Although inexpensive, they are not sturdy and cannot hold many books. With a donation of more durable bins, it will be possible to accommodate new books and make the entire classroom library available for students to independently choose books that match their interest and reading level. The more students read independently, the more they increase their vocabulary and improve their reading fluency and subsequently improve their academic performance. Additionally, with our new book bins we will be able to: sort and store over 300 books and accommodate new titles; make all books available on a daily basis; label each bin by genre; employ a classroom librarian who can manage the library and keep it organized; foster independence as students select titles by reading the labels posted on each bin.
With our newly organized library students will be able to independently choose books that match their interest and reading level, increase their vocabulary, improve their fluency and subsequently improve their academic performance.
