My students love books. They are encouraged to read "widely and wildly". Our desks are full of other necessary items, so there is little room for the books the students want to enjoy. I would never want a child to turn down a book because he/she didn't have somewhere safe to keep it.
I teach 21 fourth graders at a Title I school.
Most of my students receive free lunch. Some are learning English, while others are struggling with learning disabilities. My students are very hard working and they know that I have high expectations of them. They have also learned a lot about being patient with each other and tolerant of learning differences. Though they may sometimes quibble, much like siblings, they would be the first ones to support or stand up for any classmate that needs it. My classroom is my students' "home away from home". We are a family.
My Project
My students have so many books. Some of which are very large. Having chair pockets will enable my students to keep their library books and guided reading materials in a safe and easy-to-get-to spot instead of trying to cram everything into their overly crowded desk, thus damaging their borrowed books. So often I call them to guided reading and have to wait while they hunt through their desk trying to find what they need to bring with them to the table.
My students have to have a better way of organizing their books.
The chair pockets will teach them to take care of their belongings, foster independence and teach the value of being responsible.
