Snuggle Up with a Book

My students need poetry and fiction books and bright skeins of yarn so they each may have a handcrafted, comfy afghan to snuggle while reading with family and friends.

My Students

I not only teach my students to read, I hope I instill the love of reading that was nurtured in me. Reading opens the door to the world around you. Reading is an avenue for the imagination, a gateway to adventure. Reading empowers you with knowledge and inspires you to change the world.

We are a small, urban school nestled in a north-side neighborhood of Indianapolis.

Although 70% of our population is at or above poverty level, we are continuously striving to achieve at higher levels each and every day. My students have already burrowed their way into my heart! They are bright, engaging, and curious. They love learning and coming to school each day. They struggle, yet they persevere. They are caring, helpful, and forgiving. They ARE the future.

My Project

Each child will have their own teacher-crocheted afghan to snuggle up with during independent and partner reading times. My young students LOVE spreading pillows and blankets throughout the classroom to read and discuss stories with friends. Having new books in our classroom library will spark interest, encourage conversation, and improve comprehension.

It is my sincere hope that reading together, having literature-based conversations, and enjoying the JOY of reading will inspire my students to become life-long readers.

A strong foundation in reading will open the door to a bright future for my 1st graders.
