My Students

Don't you just love curling up in your favorite chair with a good book? Doesn't that just make you want to stay in that spot and read all day? Our ugly purple bookshelf does not give us those warm fuzzies. We need a new inviting bookshelf to hold all of our books.

My sweet 1st graders are just beginning their journey into the world of literacy.

Their experience can go two ways. They can have a great experience and desire to read or they can see reading as a chore and something the HAVE to do. For these high poverty students reading is not a high priority. I want them to view reading as an escape that they can get lost in. When I create this cozy book nook full of bean bags and pillows they will have a calm and inviting environment that will foster just that.

My Project

This bookshelf is the first step in creating our book nook. Our current bookshelf is small, ugly, and not functional. It doesn't have a back so books are always falling through and making a mess. The books are squished together with no rhyme or reason in organization. It's not fun to try to find the book that's just right for you. This new bookshelf that we are asking for is bent at a 90 degree angle which is perfect for separating our book nook from the rest of our classroom. It has separations built in it which I can use to separate books by genre or reading levels.

I can already see children reading by themselves or with partners and having huge smiles on their faces.

I am so excited to be creating an environment where partners can help each other decode words or share opinions on their hot read! Thanks for you help in making their book nook dreams come true! The kids really deserve it!
