What are the three C's necessary for a great Kindergarten classroom? Cozy, comfortable and clean . . . is that too much to ask for?
I am a third year teacher in a NY city public school. When I entered the classroom I am currently in I was left with a dingy, dirty foam puzzle-piece makeshift mat for my students to gather on. There was not enough room for all the children to sit comfortably without invading each others personal space. So I use an old blanket as extra seating, but no one wants to sit there.
To gather together on the rug should be effortless but instead I spend precious minutes designating places on either the dingy old foam mat or on the "no mans land" of the old blanket. Personal space is limited and children are too close together and jammed in like sardines. In September I will have at least five more students than I had this year, which means five more bodies on an already crowded gathering spot. I was told if I wanted a new rug I had to purchase it myself, which I simply cannot afford. The floor and foam matting is especially cold and bare in the wintertime and is falling apart bit by bit.
Needless to say we need a new carpet that is clean, comfortable, spacious and cozy for all to gather together on. What better place to read a good book or do a great floor puzzle on than a spacious, clean and cozy carpet? Snug as a bug on a rug, that's what I want my Kindergarten class to be!
