This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
We are a second grade classroom within an urban public school. Funds may be tight and resources are allocated to other important projects and materials. Our school is an innovative dual language Spanish program and many of my students come from underprivileged neighborhoods. They come to me with very few social experiences and crave the opportunities for exploration and creativity that my classroom provides. My students are eager to learn and always look forward to learning new topics while also becoming bilingual and bi-literate scholars.
In the classroom, the rug is a place where we conduct our daily mini-lessons, and social-emotional discussions, and where students can go to work collaboratively with one another during centers, math, and other independent, partner, and group work opportunities.
So much learning takes place on the rug, so having a nice, comfortable and clean space will keep my students cozy and focused on their work. Not only do my students do much of their work on the rug, but this is an area where music class, Playworks, and indoor recess sometimes take place. Having a new rug will ensure that my students have an open, spacious place to happily learn and grow.
