My Students

Imagine walking into a classroom full of learning happening...but only at desks! My classroom is tile only, and my students need a place to sit together to facilitate our classroom community, and to have a place to gather during read-alouds! Math centers require kids to spread out! They need space!

I teach in a very urban school district.

We are a Title 1 school, where our entire school receives free lunch. I have a class of 27 sixth graders, all of different reading and math abilities. Our school is a Project Restore school, meaning we test weekly in Reading and Math with a rigorous pacing guide to allow our students to be prepared for statewide tests. My students need a place to feel comfortable to work without being stuck at desks!

My Project

A couple of rugs will help my students to feel comfortable and at home in our classroom. We will be able to have daily community circle to help teach interpersonal skills and social skills. My students will also be able to use this space for our daily read-alouds, when students need to sit together but want to be comfortable! Math centers are important to us as well, and we will be able to spread out and enjoy them without having to sit only at desks or tables!

Collaboration is a skill that needs to be practiced and mastered in school for a child to be successful in life.

A new set of rugs will make my classroom seem more welcoming, while providing my students with the space they need to accomplish what is necessary. Sixth graders read quite often, and a comfortable place to spread out and relax is just what they need! Likewise, a place for us to gather as a class to help my students become productive community members is an added bonus!
