This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are energetic kids eager to learn. Over 90% of our students come from low-income households. A large percentage of our families meet the definition of homeless, living in garages or multiple families in one residence. My kids' parents are struggling to pay rent and get food on the table. And yet, our children still want to create, read, write, and learn!
My students worry about coming to school and staying safe; and yet, they still come to school to explore, learn and grow.
I am working to meet my students' needs emotionally, as well as academically, during this pandemic. I want them to be safe and stay healthy as they work hard to learn to read, learn to use technology, and at the same time, learn language arts, math, science, and social studies.
My Project
We are back in the classroom, and our desktop shields are falling over. The suction cups are not sticking. I hope to protect my students with sturdy, plexiglass shields that will stay standing firm and tall. And, they are made in the USA! I love supporting businesses in the USA. These shields are well made, have thick legs and sturdy construction. We will use wet-erase markers on the plexiglass to write words, lists, math equations, and play strategic games like Dots and tic-tac-toe.
This pandemic will not be over in June and I want to protect my students for the year to come with plexiglass shields, made in the USA, so that germs and viruses will not spread easily; and we will use these shields to write math equations, words, and play learning games with partners opposite the shield.
I don't just want these shields; I feel that I need them to keep my kids and our staff safe. The cost of these shields is minimal, compared to the cost of spreading germs and possibly Covid-19. If you can help me get these shields, I would be extremely grateful. I will feel that I have truly taken care of my students as best I can.
