Chemistry can not be understood by reading informational text alone; students must be engaged in the learning and collaborative peer tutoring process about chemistry. Following the lessons in the Inquiries in Chemistry Kit will allow my students to be able to differentiate between chemical and physical changes; understand chemical reactions, including the law of conservation of mass; and balance equations.
Students will analyze data from 73 double-replacement reactions, allowing them to develop an answer to the question, “How can scientists predict the properties of the products of a chemical reaction or design a chemical reaction to produce products with specific properties?”The main goal of this science inquiry is for my students to be able to predict the identity of the products of a chemical reaction given the reactants.
In addition, I want my students to be able write the chemical formula of a substance given the name of the substance and use evidence from observations to identify the reactants and products in chemical reactions.
If I could describe my classroom in five words, the words would be: unique in their own way, authentic, rigorous, supportive, engaging, and community. Students in my class have ownership of their own learning and a lot of what goes on happens organically. Because of the passion I have for creating future engineers, chemists, and general scientists, my class is definitely engaging.
