Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My school is located in the Soundview/Clason Point section of the Bronx. We are considered a Title I school, due to the fact that many of the students are considered to be in low socioeconomic backgrounds and qualify for free lunch.
The students in my first grade are energetic and ready to learn, despite the unprecedented learning situation.
My kids are special because they do not allow their circumstances to dictate the success that they have in school. They come prepared to learn and often keep still working on their projects even after the class period has ended and it's time to transition to their next lesson.
My Project
S.T.EM is not the first thing people think about when they hear 1st graders. And when they do, it is very simple activities like sink and float or walking water. These are fun activities but they have been done so many times. My first graders are energetic, lively, curious students. They ask a lot of questions about how things work and working remotely only allows me to show them because they do not have the hands-on materials to investigate themselves. It is not the same. They want to do the activity themselves and see the results in real-time. Every Friday the students get to choose an activity. Making things and art are the two biggest things they ask for, but we can not do it because we don't have the supplies.
With the Snap Circuits and art materials, the sky's the limit for my students, and there at home experience can be fulfilled.
Snap circuits are plastic connectors that when snapped together in a particular pattern will make a light bulb light up, a motor run, a fan spin. With the art supplies, they can paint images that go along with our reading lessons. We can plan a paint night with the families. There are so many options because they have the materials that they need.
My students will now have something to really look forward to because they will have tangible materials to help fulfill their curiosity and creativity.
