My Students

Our school is set in a relatively small town (around 5,400 people) and serves a large rural area (around 2,000 students in the school). There are students who ride the bus for an hour each way, and students who walk to school. There are students who are highly mobile, and students who have deep roots in the area. There are students who were born on the other side of the world, and students who live on the same land their great-grandparents did. Nearly 70 percent of our students receive free or reduced lunch.

All of our students love science!

The hands-on activities and connections to the real world intrigue and challenge everyone. They work together and help each other learn new things.

My Project

Even though we live in a rural area, many of our students don't experience the science that lives just outside their door.

The Ozark Natural Science Center provides an incredible experience where biology, geology, astronomy, and ecology all play a part.

Students will go on two different nature hikes, where they will learn about the interaction of different earth systems - how living things affect water, soil, and rocks, for example. Students will also attend classes led by teacher-naturalists where they learn about properties of water, predator-prey relationships, and how scientists use radio tracking to learn about local animals. Many students' favorite event is the night hike, where they venture into the woods with no artificial light!

This overnight trip is a chance for our fifth-graders to experience science in a way that they can't experience it in the classroom. This DonorsChoose fundraiser is one of many fundraisers done throughout the year so every students can make this once-in-a-lifetime trip.
